£ 40,000 to £45,000 pa (dependent on experience)
Base: The Ismaili Centre, South Kensington, London, with some travel across mainland Europe.
Organisation: The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is a London-based higher education institution, established in 1977 with the object of promoting scholarship and learning of Muslim cultures and societies, historical as well as contemporary, and a better understanding of their relationship with other societies and faiths.
Background: Ta`lim is an international programme in religious education for Ismaili Muslim students at the primary level. Its overall aim is to educate the pupils in the faith, history and cultures of Muslim peoples and of the Ismaili Muslim community in particular. In this connection, it seeks to promote self-development, learning and a moral engagement with society. The programme consists of a planned curriculum drawing on modern principles of education. It is presented through a series of teaching and learning materials, designed to meet the needs of students, parents and teachers living in different countries and cultures. The Ta`lim curriculum is delivered at Religious Education classes across the world through a system of volunteer led teaching alongside devotional literature and practices.
Role: The IIS invites applications for the role of Primary Religious Education Officer to lead on religious formation and the development and implementation of quality primary religious education (RE) focussing on curriculum, teaching and learning and parental and community engagement across the UK Jurisdiction. This is a permanent, full-time role.
The role will support the teaching of the IIS Ta`lim curriculum to Ismaili students and wider community engagement initiatives in the UK and Europe and will entail overseeing quality delivery through classroom based as well as online/remote teaching, episodic and other implementation strategies. The Primary RE Officer will also contribute to the effective planning of sound complementary RE programmes to meet the needs of students and community members and to develop a pool of voluntary teachers and teacher educators within the UK jurisdiction RE centres.
Person Profile: The ideal candidate will have a degree in social sciences, preferably in Islamic Studies or Education - educational leadership or management or teacher education. They will have familiarity or experience with Primary Religious Education and the Ta`lim curriculum alongside experience of working with, managing and developing volunteers in the context of the Ismaili community.
