The Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP) is a joint postgraduate programme run by The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in collaboration with the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) and SOAS University of London. The programme recruits a largely international student body and extends over two academic years culminating in two postgraduate awards: the MA in Muslim Societies and Civilisations and the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Reflective Practice. Following completion of the academic programme in London, graduates proceed to an in-service phase of teaching at the secondary level in their own countries.
The IIS is currently looking to recruit a Teaching and Learning Tutor who will perform multiple academic and administrative duties in support of the students’ learning experience on STEP, with particular focus on the MA Muslim Societies and Civilisations. The post holder will act as a first point of contact for students, supporting them in their learning as well as providing general guidance and pastoral care, systematically analysing their performance in order to ensure pro-active intervention when required. The post holder will also conduct, in collaboration with the faculty, seminars and/or tutorials in the ways, modes and times defined in the programme curriculum. Under the guidance of the Programme Leader, the Teaching and Learning Tutor will support the MA faculty in refining their teaching practice, as well as developing their awareness of the relationship between the MA and the IIS Secondary Curriculum. The post holder will also assist the faculty throughout the assessment and marking processes.
The position is a key student support role. Candidates will need a Masters degree and sound postgraduate-level expertise in regard to Muslim societies and civilisations as well as familiarity with contemporary classroom and school dynamics across international settings of key interest to the Institute. Substantial secondary-level teaching experience in Religious Education or a closely related field in organisations within the Aga Khan network of institutions is also essential, as is experience in team building and leadership within a school context. Training or qualifications in coaching/mentoring/counselling, Qualified Teacher Status, or other equivalent teaching qualifications are desirable, along with experience of teaching at the HE level. This role is offered as a 3-year contract.
